Early Life and Education

WEB Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg (pronounced "BOO-tij-əj") was born on January 19, 1982. He grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and graduated with high honors from Harvard University and the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.

Political Career

Buttigieg's political career began as the mayor of South Bend from 2012 to 2020. He gained national recognition for his progressive policies and his successful revitalization of the city.

Secretary of Transportation

In February 2021, Buttigieg was sworn in as the 19th Secretary of Transportation in the Biden administration. As Secretary, he has focused on:
